State Commercial Registries (Juntas Comerciais) and the National Register of Legal Entities (CNPJ)
Known locally as Juntas Comerciais / Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica (CNPJ).
Brazil has no single national companies register. A company is registered with the commercial board (Junta Comercial) of its home state, and each board keeps the registration records for companies in that state. The Commercial Registry of the State of São Paulo, JUCESP, operates the Jucesp Online service, which provides database searches, the ficha cadastral (the company's registration record), certificates (certidões) in simplified, specific and full-content forms, and copies of digitised filing documents. On registration a company receives a NIRE, the identification number under which it is recorded at its state board.
Alongside state registration, every legal entity is enrolled nationally in the CNPJ, the Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica, administered by the Federal Revenue Service (Receita Federal). A CNPJ has 14 positions: an eight-character root, a four-character establishment suffix and two numeric check digits, written in the form 00.000.000/0001-00. From 31 July 2026 the Receita Federal issues new registrations in an alphanumeric format combining letters and numbers; existing numeric CNPJs remain valid and unchanged. The Receita Federal's public consultation issues the Comprovante de Inscrição e de Situação Cadastral, the official confirmation of a company's registration and current status.
JUCESP registry records also cover the QSA, the quadro de sócios e administradores, the company's table of partners and administrators as filed with the register.
