About the register

Central Business Name Index (Zefix)

Known locally as Zentraler Firmenindex (Zefix).

Switzerland keeps its commercial register at cantonal level: each cantonal commercial register office maintains the entries for entities seated in its canton, and register fees are exclusively a cantonal matter. Federal oversight sits with the Federal Commercial Registry Office (EHRA) in the Federal Office of Justice, which operates Zefix, the Central Business Name Index (Zentraler Firmenindex). Zefix is updated daily, publishes the core data of every legal entity registered in Switzerland, such as name, legal seat and domicile address, and links each entity to the online extract of the responsible cantonal register office.

Every active business in Switzerland is given a standardised enterprise identification number (UID), written in the format CHE-xxx.xxx.xxx. The UID register behind it is maintained by the Federal Statistical Office, and a Zefix search works with the UID as well as the business name.

Beneficial ownership is changing. Parliament adopted the Transparency of Legal Entities Act (TJPG) on 26 September 2025, and from 1 October 2026 companies and other legal entities must report their beneficial owners to the Swiss transparency register kept by the Federal Office of Justice. Company Records already resolves beneficial ownership by following the registered shareholders up the ownership chain, entity by entity, from official registry filings, without depending on that register. The Company Records report for Switzerland provides the registry extract and company registration sourced from the official register.

What exactly is a "Company Record"?
Two things in one purchase: the KYB report (company data, controlling parties, shareholders and beneficial owners) and the standard set of official registry documents needed for AML and KYB compliance.
Can I get additional filing documents?
Every record includes the standard document set for AML and KYB compliance. The official register holds further filings — listed above under "Available separately" — and if you need one beyond the standard set, contact us and we'll arrange it.
Can I get shareholders and beneficial owners?
Yes. This register publishes shareholder and beneficial-owner data, and the record includes it with the ownership chain resolved. The chain is our own work: registers file shareholdings, not the resolved ownership behind them.
How current is the information?
It is retrieved from the register at the time of purchase, so it reflects the register's current state — not a cached copy.
Do I need a subscription or a contract?

What is Zefix and how does it relate to the cantonal commercial registers?
Zefix, the Central Business Name Index, is the federal search layer over the Swiss commercial register, operated by the Federal Commercial Registry Office (EHRA) in the Federal Office of Justice. It is updated daily, returns the core public data of every registered legal entity, and links through to the online extract held by the cantonal commercial register office responsible for the entity's seat.
What does a Swiss UID number look like?
The UID, the enterprise identification number, is written in the format CHE-xxx.xxx.xxx. Every active business in Switzerland is given one, and the UID register is maintained by the Federal Statistical Office. A Zefix search accepts the UID as well as the business name.
Who issues a Swiss commercial register extract?
The cantonal commercial register office where the entity has its legal seat holds the entry, and Zefix links every entity directly to that office's online extract. Register fees are set and charged by the cantons. The Company Records report for Switzerland includes the registry extract and company registration sourced from the official register.
Does Switzerland have a public register of beneficial owners?
Switzerland has legislated for a federal transparency register: the TJPG, adopted by parliament on 26 September 2025, obliges companies and other legal entities to report their beneficial owners from 1 October 2026. That register will be kept by the Federal Office of Justice, separately from the commercial register. The official pages describe a reporting obligation towards the authorities and do not describe public access to the register. Company Records resolves UBOs today by tracing registered shareholders up the ownership chain, entity by entity, from official registry filings.
