About the register

Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH)

Known locally as Patent- och registerstyrelsen (PRS).

The Aaland Islands are an autonomous, Swedish-speaking region of Finland, and companies seated there are registered in the Finnish Trade Register, kept by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH). An entity seated in Mariehamn carries a Finnish Business ID and appears through the same PRH and YTJ services as any other Finnish-registered company. The details in the Trade Register are public: anyone is entitled to obtain information about the entries made in the register and the registered notifications and their appendices, except for beneficial owner details.

The Business ID (FO-nummer in Swedish) is written as seven digits, a hyphen and a control character, and is issued by the PRH or the Finnish Tax Administration through their joint Business Information System (YTJ). Company data can be searched free of charge at ytj.fi, and Trade Register extracts are issued through the PRH's Virre information service.

Aland's autonomy operates alongside the register rather than in place of it. Companies and other associations must always hold a permission to carry on trade in Aland (naringsratt), granted by the Government of Aland (Alands landskapsregering), and the business language in Aland is Swedish. Beneficial owner details filed with the PRH are not public; access is limited to the purposes provided in the Finnish Anti-Money Laundering Act. The official register does not make shareholder or beneficial-owner data public, so a record cannot include what the register does not publish. The company particulars and controlling parties it does hold are included.
How current is the information?

Why are Aaland Islands companies in a Finnish register?
Aland's autonomy covers the right to carry on trade, which requires a permission (naringsratt) from the Government of Aland, but company registration is handled by the Finnish state. Companies seated in Aland are entered in the Finnish Trade Register kept by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office and appear in the same YTJ company search and Virre extract services as any other Finnish-registered company.
What is a Finnish Business ID (FO-nummer)?
The Business ID is written as seven digits, a hyphen and a control character, in the format 1234567-8. It is issued by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office or the Finnish Tax Administration through their joint Business Information System (YTJ), and a new enterprise receives it on registration in that system.
Is Finnish Trade Register information public?
Yes. The PRH states that the details in the Finnish Trade Register are public and that anyone is entitled to obtain information about the entries made in the register, the registered notifications and their appendices, with beneficial owner details as the exception. A Trade Register extract with a company's current registered details can be retrieved through the Virre information service.
Who can access beneficial owner details held by the PRH?
Beneficial owner details are not available to everyone. The PRH provides beneficial owner information about other companies, and personal beneficial owner details, only for the purposes provided in the Finnish Anti-Money Laundering Act. Registered company representatives and registered beneficial owners can retrieve their own details through the PRH's beneficial owner information service.
