About the register

Commercial Registry

Known locally as Registo Comercial.

Commercial registration in Portugal (registo comercial) is administered by the Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado, I.P. (IRN), the registries and notarial institute of the Ministry of Justice, which also runs the civil, land, vehicle and ship registers. Company formalities and record requests run through the justica.gov.pt service portal, and companies can be formed online through Empresa Online 2.0.

The register's standard output is the certidão permanente, the permanent certificate of commercial registration: a digital certificate consulted online that replaces the paper certificate of a company's registration. Legal persons are identified by the NIPC, the número de identificação de pessoa coletiva, which appears together with the social-security number (NISS) on the cartão da empresa, the company identification card managed through the IRN.

Beneficial ownership sits in a separate register, the Registo Central do Beneficiário Efetivo (RCBE), also managed by the IRN under Law 89/2017. Every entity constituted in Portugal, or intending to do business there, must file an RCBE declaration identifying the natural persons who ultimately own or control it. The RCBE portal provides a consultation service with proof of consultation, and the register's information does not of itself constitute proof of an entity's legal position; beneficial owners may ask for access to their details to be restricted on the grounds set out in article 22 of the law. What exactly is a "Company Record"?
Two things in one purchase: the KYB report (company data, controlling parties, shareholders and beneficial owners) and the standard set of official registry documents needed for AML and KYB compliance.
Can I get additional filing documents?
Every record includes the standard document set for AML and KYB compliance. The official register holds further filings — listed above under "Available separately" — and if you need one beyond the standard set, contact us and we'll arrange it.
Can I get shareholders and beneficial owners?
Yes. This register publishes shareholder and beneficial-owner data, and the record includes it with the ownership chain resolved. The chain is our own work: registers file shareholdings, not the resolved ownership behind them.
How current is the information?
It is retrieved from the register at the time of purchase, so it reflects the register's current state — not a cached copy.
Do I need a subscription or a contract?

What is a certidão permanente?
The certidão permanente is the online permanent certificate of a Portuguese company's commercial registration, and it replaces the paper certidão. It is consulted digitally at any time rather than collected as a one-off paper document. What is a NIPC?
The NIPC (número de identificação de pessoa coletiva) is the identification number of a legal person in Portugal. It appears, together with the social-security number (NISS), on the cartão da empresa or cartão de pessoa coletiva, the official identification card for companies and other collective persons managed through the IRN.
Who keeps the Portuguese commercial register?
The Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado, I.P. (IRN), an institute of the Ministry of Justice, keeps the commercial register alongside the civil, land, vehicle and ship registers. Its services, including online company formation through Empresa Online 2.0 and requests for certificates, run through the justica.gov.pt portal.
Is beneficial ownership information public in Portugal?
Portugal keeps beneficial-ownership data in the RCBE (Registo Central do Beneficiário Efetivo), managed by the IRN under Law 89/2017, and every entity constituted in Portugal or intending to do business there must file a declaration. The portal offers a consultation service with proof of consultation, and the law lets beneficial owners request restricted access to their details on specified grounds. The RCBE is separate from the commercial register itself.
