Malta Business Registry
The Malta Business Registry (MBR) is the central authority for commercial entities in Malta, established as an agency under Subsidiary Legislation 595.27 and headed by the Registrar of Companies. It registers companies and other commercial partnerships, collects statutory filings and fees, houses the Insolvency and Receivership Service and has acted as a supervisory authority under the Prevention of Money Laundering regulations since 2021. Filing and searching run through BAROS, the Business Automation Registry Online System at register.mbr.mt, which is available around the clock.
Every company files an annual return on each anniversary of its registration, submitted to the Registrar within 42 days of the anniversary date and signed by at least one director or the company secretary. The registry makes company information publicly available, including a list of shareholders, directors, company secretaries and other persons vested with administration, with details such as name, residential address, nationality and business occupation.
The MBR also maintains Malta's central register of beneficial owners and verifies the information filed there. That register is not on general public view: since 10 July 2025 access requires a written application demonstrating a legitimate interest. Company Records resolves beneficial ownership by following the registered shareholders up the ownership chain, entity by entity, from official registry filings such as the annual return, which works even where the beneficial ownership register is restricted.
