About the register

Company records in Kenya are kept by the Companies Registry of the Business Registration Service (BRS), which also oversees the Movable Property Security Rights Registry, the Insolvency Registry and the Hire Purchase Registry. The Companies Registry administers the Companies Act, 2015, the Registration of Business Names Act (Cap 499) and the Limited Liability Partnerships Act No. 42 of 2011. The Registrar registers limited liability companies, limited liability partnerships and business names, registers debentures and charges, and maintains the statutory records.

Filings and searches run through the eCitizen platform: name reservation and business registration are merged into a single online application, and the registry offers official searches and CR12 lists for entities registered under BRS.

Beneficial ownership is filed but not published. Companies submit a copy of their register of beneficial owners to the Registrar under section 93A of the Companies Act and the Companies (Beneficial Ownership Information) Regulations, 2020, as amended in 2023. The regulations state that beneficial ownership information shall not be made available to the public or be published, save for publication by the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority in the government portal for entities awarded tenders and disclosure by a government where the matter is of public interest; the Registrar may make it available to competent authorities and, with protected personal data removed, to financial institutions and designated businesses. The Company Records report resolves beneficial ownership by following registered shareholders up the ownership chain from official filings, and includes the registry extract sourced from the official register.

What exactly is a "Company Record"?

Can I get additional filing documents?
Every record includes the standard document set for AML and KYB compliance. If you need a document beyond that set, contact us and we'll find out whether the register holds it.
Can I get shareholders and beneficial owners?
Yes. This register publishes shareholder and beneficial-owner data, and the record includes it with the ownership chain resolved. The chain is our own work: registers file shareholdings, not the resolved ownership behind them.
How current is the information?
It is retrieved from the register at the time of purchase, so it reflects the register's current state — not a cached copy.
Do I need a subscription or a contract?

Who keeps the companies register in Kenya?
The Companies Registry of the Business Registration Service (BRS), under the Registrar of Companies. The registry administers the Companies Act, 2015, the Registration of Business Names Act (Cap 499) and the Limited Liability Partnerships Act No. 42 of 2011, and its services are accessed online through the eCitizen platform.
How are Kenyan company records searched?
Registry services, including official searches and CR12 lists for entities registered under BRS, are delivered through the eCitizen platform. For new registrations, name reservation and business registration have been merged into one online application in which up to three preferred names are submitted with the full application.
Is beneficial ownership information public in Kenya?
No. The Companies (Beneficial Ownership Information) Regulations, as amended in 2023, provide that beneficial ownership information shall not be made available to the public or be published, with narrow exceptions for the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority's portal in relation to tender awards and disclosure by a government in the public interest. The Company Records report resolves beneficial ownership by following registered shareholders up the ownership chain from official filings.
What must Kenyan companies file about their beneficial owners?
A company keeps a register of beneficial owners, validates and verifies the particulars before submitting a copy to the Registrar, and files notices of new beneficial owners and of persons ceasing to be beneficial owners in the prescribed forms under section 93A of the Companies Act. Nominee shareholders and nominee directors must disclose their status, and the Registrar marks them with an asterisk in the registers.
