About the register

Companies Registry

Known locally as 公司註冊處.

Hong Kong company records are held by the Companies Registry (公司註冊處), the government department that administers the Companies Ordinance (Cap. 622) and maintains the Companies Register. Public searches run through the e-Search Services of the Registry's e-Services Portal at www.e-services.cr.gov.hk, launched on 27 December 2023 when the revamped Integrated Companies Registry Information System replaced the former ICRIS Cyber Search Centre and the e-Registry. A search returns the current data of a registered company together with image records of the documents registered and kept on the Companies Register, and certified copies of those documents can be ordered.

Since 27 December 2023 Hong Kong has used a Unique Business Identifier. The 8-digit Business Registration Number (BRN) assigned by the Business Registration Office of the Inland Revenue Department, being the first eight digits of the business registration certificate number, replaced the former CR number as the key identifier for searches and filings. For companies incorporated on or after that date, the BRN is also the number shown on the certificate of incorporation.

Shareholdings in private companies are public through filings: the annual return (Form NAR1) sets out the particulars of members and their shareholdings alongside the registered office, directors and company secretary. Beneficial ownership is treated differently. Significant controllers registers are kept by companies themselves for inspection by law enforcement officers and are not filed with the Registry. Company Records resolves beneficial ownership by following the shareholders in registry filings up the ownership chain, entity by entity, without needing the controllers register.

Are these official records?
Yes. Every record is sourced from the official register, ICRIS Companies Registry Cyber Search Centre and IRD Inland Revenue Department Hong Kong, at the moment you buy. It is registry data only — nothing aggregated, resold, or editorialised.
What exactly is a "Company Record"?
Two things in one purchase: the KYB report (company data, controlling parties, shareholders and beneficial owners) and the standard set of official registry documents needed for AML and KYB compliance.
Can I get additional filing documents?
Every record includes the standard document set for AML and KYB compliance. The official register holds further filings — listed above under "Available separately" — and if you need one beyond the standard set, contact us and we'll arrange it.
Can I get shareholders and beneficial owners?
Yes. This register publishes shareholder and beneficial-owner data, and the record includes it with the ownership chain resolved. The chain is our own work: registers file shareholdings, not the resolved ownership behind them.
How current is the information?
It is retrieved from the register at the time of purchase, so it reflects the register's current state — not a cached copy.
Do I need a subscription or a contract?
No. Buy a single record with a card. There is no subscription and no minimum.
Does the Hong Kong Companies Registry show shareholders?
Yes, for non-listed companies. The annual return (Form NAR1) includes a schedule stating the particulars of members and their shareholdings, which must be completed even where nothing has changed since the last return, and shareholder details also appear on the incorporation form (NNC1) and returns of allotment (NSC1). The Company Records report for Hong Kong includes these filings, so shareholder information comes from the registry documents themselves.
What is a Hong Kong Business Registration Number (BRN)?
The BRN is the first eight digits of the business registration certificate number assigned by the Business Registration Office of the Inland Revenue Department. Since 27 December 2023 it has served as the Unique Business Identifier for entities administered by the Registrar of Companies, replacing the former CR number in searches and filings. Companies registered earlier without a BRN were given a converted number with an alphabetic prefix, for example C0012345, and the Registry provides a mapping function between old CR numbers and BRNs.
Is ICRIS still the way to search Hong Kong company records?
No. The Cyber Search Centre, the Company Search Mobile Service and the e-Registry operated until 22 December 2023, and the revamped ICRIS launched on 27 December 2023 as a single platform, the e-Services Portal at www.e-services.cr.gov.hk. Company searches now run through its e-Search Services.
What does a company particulars search in Hong Kong show?
It returns the current data of a company registered under the Companies Ordinance, and the register also holds image records of every registered document, from incorporation forms to annual returns, which can be searched and certified. The HK CR Company Particulars and filing documents in the Company Records report are sourced from this register.
