About the register

Trade and Companies Register

Known locally as Registre du commerce et des sociétés (RCS).

French commercial companies are registered in the Registre du commerce et des sociétés (RCS), the trade and companies register kept by the greffes, the clerks' offices of the commercial courts. Proof of registration is the extrait Kbis, the up-to-date identity card of a registered company. It states the court clerk who signed the registration, the company name, Siren number, APE code, legal form, share capital, registered office, date of creation, activity and the identity of the principal director, administrators and statutory auditors. A company's representative can download its own Kbis free of charge through monidenum.fr, managed by the greffes; anyone can order the extract of a registered company through Infogreffe or at the competent greffe.

Since 1 January 2023 the Registre national des entreprises (RNE), operated by the Institut national de la propriété industrielle (INPI), has merged the former national registers into a single electronic register covering commercial, craft, agricultural and independent activity in France. It is fed by the Guichet unique for business formalities, and its public data is free to consult on data.inpi.fr. Businesses are identified by the 9-digit Siren number assigned by INSEE; each establishment carries a 14-digit Siret, the Siren plus a 5-digit classification number.

Access to the register of beneficial owners has been restricted since 31 July 2024 to supervisory authorities, obliged persons, and those with a legitimate interest. Company Records resolves beneficial ownership by following registered shareholders up the ownership chain, entity by entity, from official filings, so the restriction does not prevent UBO identification.

Are these official records?
Yes. Every record is sourced from the official register, Infogreffe, at the moment you buy. It is registry data only — nothing aggregated, resold, or editorialised.
What exactly is a "Company Record"?
Two things in one purchase: the KYB report (company data, controlling parties, shareholders and beneficial owners) and the standard set of official registry documents needed for AML and KYB compliance.
Can I get additional filing documents?
Every record includes the standard document set for AML and KYB compliance. The official register holds further filings — listed above under "Available separately" — and if you need one beyond the standard set, contact us and we'll arrange it.
Can I get shareholders and beneficial owners?
Yes. This register publishes shareholder and beneficial-owner data, and the record includes it with the ownership chain resolved. The chain is our own work: registers file shareholdings, not the resolved ownership behind them.
How current is the information?
It is retrieved from the register at the time of purchase, so it reflects the register's current state — not a cached copy.
Do I need a subscription or a contract?

What is a Kbis extract?
The extrait Kbis is the official extract proving that a company is registered in the Registre du commerce et des sociétés (RCS), and it serves as the company's up-to-date identity card. It states the Siren number, legal form, share capital, registered office, activity and principal officers, and counterparties usually ask for a copy less than three months old. The Company Records report for France includes the registry extract together with the memorandum and articles of association filed with the register.
What is the difference between a Siren and a Siret number?
The Siren is the unique 9-digit identifier of the business itself, assigned by the national statistics institute INSEE and never reused once allocated. The Siret identifies each establishment of the business and has 14 digits: the 9 digits of the Siren followed by a 5-digit internal classification number (NIC). The Siren also forms the base of the intra-Community VAT number.
What is the Registre national des entreprises (RNE)?
The RNE is the single electronic register that has covered businesses carrying on a commercial, craft, agricultural or independent activity in France since 1 January 2023, replacing the former national trade and companies register, the trades directory and the agricultural assets register. It is operated by the INPI and fed directly by the Guichet unique through which all business formalities are declared. Its public data can be consulted free of charge on data.inpi.fr.
Is beneficial ownership information public in France?
No. Since 31 July 2024, access to the register of beneficial owners has been limited to the supervisory authorities listed in the Monetary and Financial Code, to persons subject to anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing obligations, and to persons or organisations able to demonstrate a legitimate interest, who apply through the INPI. The change follows the Court of Justice of the European Union judgment of 22 November 2022. Company Records is unaffected in practice: it resolves beneficial ownership by following the registered shareholders up the ownership chain, entity by entity, from official registry filings.
