About the register

Austrian Companies Register

Known locally as Firmenbuch.

Austria's register of companies is the Firmenbuch, the successor to the former Handelsregister. It is a public register kept as a central database by the Firmenbuch courts: the Landesgerichte, with the Handelsgericht Wien responsible in Vienna and the Landesgericht für Zivilrechtssachen Graz in Graz. The register has two parts, the Hauptbuch holding the entries themselves and the Urkundensammlung holding the documents behind them, such as articles of association. Anyone may inspect the Firmenbuch and request extracts.

Each registered entity is assigned a Firmenbuchnummer of up to six digits plus a check letter. The register is queried for a fee through JustizOnline, the Austrian justice system's online portal, and a Firmenbuchauszug retrieved under that number shows the currently registered data. The register also records the filing of the annual financial statements, the Jahresabschluss, which are submitted to the Firmenbuch.

Beneficial ownership data sits in a separate system, the WiEReG register of beneficial owners, run by a registry authority within the Federal Ministry of Finance. Since 1 September 2023, natural persons and organisations may inspect it where they show a legitimate interest. Company Records resolves beneficial ownership by following the registered shareholders up the ownership chain, entity by entity, from official registry filings, which works even where direct access to a beneficial ownership register is restricted. The Company Records report for Austria provides a registry extract, with the Jahresabschluss and the Aktuelle Fassung, the current consolidated version of the articles, available as filing documents.

What exactly is a "Company Record"?

Can I get additional filing documents?
Every record includes the standard document set for AML and KYB compliance. The official register holds further filings — listed above under "Available separately" — and if you need one beyond the standard set, contact us and we'll arrange it.
Can I get shareholders and beneficial owners?
Yes. This register publishes shareholder and beneficial-owner data, and the record includes it with the ownership chain resolved. The chain is our own work: registers file shareholdings, not the resolved ownership behind them.
How current is the information?
It is retrieved from the register at the time of purchase, so it reflects the register's current state — not a cached copy.
Do I need a subscription or a contract?

What is a Firmenbuchauszug?
A Firmenbuchauszug is an extract of the data currently registered for an entity in the Firmenbuch, retrieved under its Firmenbuchnummer. Which courts maintain the Austrian Firmenbuch?
The Firmenbuch is a public register kept as a database by the Firmenbuch courts: the Landesgerichte, with the Handelsgericht Wien responsible in Vienna and the Landesgericht für Zivilrechtssachen Graz in Graz. Where are Austrian annual accounts filed?
The Jahresabschluss, the annual financial statements, is submitted to the Firmenbuch, and the register records its filing. For Austria, the Jahresabschluss and the Aktuelle Fassung, the current consolidated version of the articles, are available as filing documents alongside the registry extract.
Is Austrian beneficial ownership information public?
Not on open access. Beneficial owners are recorded in the WiEReG register, run by a registry authority within the Federal Ministry of Finance and separate from the Firmenbuch. Since 1 September 2023, natural persons and organisations may inspect it where a legitimate interest is shown, while obliged entities use it to fulfil their due diligence duties. Company Records identifies UBOs by tracing the registered shareholders up the ownership chain, entity by entity, so restricted access to the WiEReG register does not prevent beneficial owners from being resolved.
