Iceland's register of enterprises, fyrirtækjaskrá, is operated by the Director of Internal Revenue (ríkisskattstjóri) within Skatturinn, Iceland Revenue and Customs, under Act No. 17/2003 on the Register of Enterprises. The same office issues the identification numbers (kennitala) under which entities are registered, and an identification number is not allocated until satisfactory information about the entity is available. The register covers individuals and legal entities engaged in business, state and municipal institutions and enterprises, associations and non-profit bodies with asset management or tax obligations, and foreign trust funds and comparable parties.

For each entity the register records the name, identification number, address, legal form, founding date, the names and addresses of board members and authorised representatives, the activity classification and, where relevant, dissolution status. The Director of Internal Revenue provides information from the register to public bodies, enterprises and the public, and no fee is charged for electronic look-ups. A single search on the Skatturinn website spans the register of enterprises, the annual accounts register (ársreikningaskrá) and the VAT register, and accepts a name, address, identification number or VAT number.

Under Act No. 82/2019, all legal entities conducting business in Iceland or registered in fyrirtækjaskrá must register their beneficial owners, with exceptions for public-sector entities and listed companies, and Skatturinn states that the registered beneficial owner of a company can be seen by looking the company up in the register.
