About the register

New Zealand Companies Office (Companies Register)

The Companies Register is maintained by the New Zealand Companies Office, part of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. It can be searched by company name, registration number or New Zealand Business Number (NZBN), and also by a director's or shareholder's name. A company's record shows its incorporation date and status, current and historical registered addresses, directors' names, addresses, appointment dates and consent forms, and its filed documents, including annual returns, constitutions and insolvency documents.

Shareholding is on the public record. Shareholders are registered with their names, addresses and share quantities at incorporation and whenever new shares are issued; for companies listed on the stock exchange or with extensive shareholdings, the register shows the details of the top ten share parcels by size. The annual return confirms the company's addresses, director details, shareholding information and whether it has an ultimate holding company, and it contains no financial information.

Every registered company has been allocated a 13-digit NZBN automatically and is included on the NZBN Register, while the company number remains the identifier specific to companies; both can be used to search. The Company Records report for New Zealand includes a Registry Extract sourced from the official register.

Yes. Every record is sourced from the official register, New Zealand Companies Office, at the moment you buy. It is registry data only — nothing aggregated, resold, or editorialised.
What exactly is a "Company Record"?
Two things in one purchase: the KYB report (company data, controlling parties, shareholders and beneficial owners) and the standard set of official registry documents needed for AML and KYB compliance.
Can I get additional filing documents?
Every record includes the standard document set for AML and KYB compliance. The official register holds further filings — listed above under "Available separately" — and if you need one beyond the standard set, contact us and we'll arrange it.
Can I get shareholders and beneficial owners?
Yes. This register publishes shareholder and beneficial-owner data, and the record includes it with the ownership chain resolved. The chain is our own work: registers file shareholdings, not the resolved ownership behind them.
How current is the information?
It is retrieved from the register at the time of purchase, so it reflects the register's current state — not a cached copy.
Do I need a subscription or a contract?
No. Buy a single record with a card. There is no subscription and no minimum.
Does the New Zealand Companies Register show shareholders?
Yes. Shareholders' names, addresses and share quantities are registered at incorporation and whenever new shares are issued, and the register can even be searched by a shareholder's name. For companies listed on the stock exchange or with extensive shareholdings, the register shows the top ten share parcels by size. What is the difference between a company number and an NZBN?
Only companies have a company number, while any business in New Zealand can hold a New Zealand Business Number, a 13-digit identifier built on GS1 Global Location Number standards. Registered companies have been allocated NZBNs automatically and are included on the NZBN Register, and the Companies Register can be searched using either identifier.
What does a New Zealand annual return contain?
The annual return confirms that the details recorded for the company are correct: its addresses, director details, shareholding information and whether it has an ultimate holding company. It is not a financial document, and it is separate from the tax return collected by Inland Revenue. It also tells the Companies Office that the company is still operating.
Can the Companies Register be searched by a person's name?
Yes. The Companies Register supports searching for companies by a director's or shareholder's name, alongside searches by company name, registration number or NZBN, and it also offers a search of banned directors. Director records include names, addresses, appointment dates and consent forms.
